Basmanny, Moscow City (Central) Russia
Russian Orthodox
The first church on this site was a wooden one built in one day in 1468. In 1657 a stone church was built close to the site, dedicated to Nikolay Wonderworker. In the late 1600s nearby vendors sold Russian pancakes, bliny. Ever since the church has been known as In Blinnikach. Officially the name became "in Klenniky" after a miraculous appearance of St Nicholas icon in the nearby village of Klenniky. The church was altered following a 1701 fire, renewed in 1748 and the belltower added in 1749. The Soviet era the church was closed in 1932, bells and crosses melted down, and the bell tower and top part destroyed. It was used as a warehouse. It was returned to the Church in 1990 and restored. It now offers daily divine liturgy and has an iconography school and parochial library.
