Crkva Sveti Nikola

Sveti Nikole North Macedonia

Macedonian Orthodox

The church here gave its name, Sveti Nikole, to both the town and region. It was built in 1313 by King Stefan Uroš II Milutin of Serbia. At one time it is said there were 42 churches in this valley, the Ovce Pole, before the destruction of the Ottoman Empire. This St. Nicholas church was the largest of them all. The present church, built on earlier foundations, was consecrated in 1990. The former church that had traditionally been "St. Nikola" was renamed and rededicated to St. Prohor in 2011. It is underneath the Church of St. Nikola.
