Mavrovo Lake North Macedonia
The village of Mavrovo was moved and flooded when an artificial lake was created for a power plant in 1953. The local people say the saint and God’s power will not allow the church to completely disappear in the waters of Mavrovo Lake. As it continues to emerge it is said that it is impossible to cover and forget a sacred place. The church was built in 1853 with painted frescos. All that could be saved has been put in the other Mavrovo church, also dedicated to St Nicholas, but known as the Roman church. Now renovated, it has the iconostasis, crosses, liturgy books, and icons from the flooded church.
