The church dates from between 1264 and 1340. It was built by merchants and dedicated to St. Nicholas, patron saint of merchants. It was home to the Nikolaev brotherhood since 1544. Damaged by fires in 1623 and 1800, only some fragments of the original walls and foundation remain. The church was Greek Catholic from 1700 until 1946 when it became Russian Orthodox. Since 1989 it has been Ukrainian Orthodox.
