Nikolaikapelle

Hannover / Hanover Germany

[Roman Catholic/Evangelical Lutheran]

The chapel, first mentioned in 1284, was built for leprosy patients. It was built outside the city walls to protect the city from both leprosy and the plague. Following the 16th century Reformation, it became a chapel to the surrounding cemetery, later serving as an English church from 1869 until 1914. It came into city ownership 1n 1980 and following the English church was rented to various free churches until World War II. A bombing attack in World War II left only the outside walls standing. The nave walls were removed in 1953 to make way for a road. The ruined chancel stands as a memorial and is the oldest building in Hannover.
