The ancient church, the oldest in the Boldons, dates to AD 920 and is built of stone quarried nearby. Some stone is believed to be from a nearby Roman fort. The tower, nave, chancel and sanctuary are from 1220; the spire and north and south aisles added in 1300. The very long chancel was extended twice and extensively restored in the 1870s.
