Church of England (Anglican)
Known as the 'Sailors' Church,' Our Lady and St Nicholas has been a presence in the city since its establishment as a chapel in the 14th century. Following a plague in the town, it was consecrated in 1362. The church was rebuilt in 1776. In 1810 the spire fell, killing 22 persons. A new one was completed in 1815. In 1940 fire following an air raid gutted the church, leaving only the tower, vestries and offices. The rebuilt church was consecrated in 1952.
