Mukachevo/ Mukacheve Ukraine
[Ukrainian Catholic] Ukrainian Orthodox
Some date the monastery to the early 11th century. It was a very important religious and cultural center. The monastery was burned in 1537 during the Habsburg-Transylvanian wars. It was rebuilt with stone replacing the wooden structures in the 17th century. Fire again destroyed the monastery in 1862 and it was quickly rebuilt. It became Uniate/Greek Catholic in the mid-1600s. During Soviet repression of the Greek Catholic church the monks were exiled and the monastery became an Orthodox convent for nuns in 1946.
