Chiesa di San Nicola

Specchia, Apulia Italy

Roman Catholic

The church was founded in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 1500s. It followed the Byzantine rite until around 1587 when it changed to the Latin rite. Recent restoration revealed a semi-fresco of the Madonna with Child from the 1500s. The main altar, from 1762, has an older statue of San Nicola. The town hosts the festa Santu Nicola - Specchia in May. As part of the celebration the statue goes in procession from the Mother Church to the Church of St. Nicholas.
