Nicolaikirche was originally built in 1238. After storm damage destroyed the tower in 1703, the Gothic church was razed. The new one, Schelfkirche, named for the new town of Schelfstadt, was constructed between 1708 and 1713. Sophie Louise, Queen of Prussia, was buried in the crypt in 1735 with other members of the Grand Ducal house.
