The cathedral, built in 1776, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, acknowledging the exceptional Baroque architecture built following a devastating earthquake in 1693. In 1862 another earthquake damaged the cathedral, causing it to be rebuilt. Six months after a 1995 earthquake weakened the structure, the dome, part of the nave, the entire roof and vault of the nave, most of the drum, and smaller domes collapsed and were lost. Reconstruction began in 1999 and is scheduled to be completed in 2007.
