The Byzantine church tower is a landmark, guiding Mediterranean sailors. It was built in 1680 and consecrated in 1827. The tower was built in two phases:. The first square Romanesque part during the Norman period in the 1100s. The octagonal part with dome was built in the 13th century. It served as a watchtower until the 17th century.
