The first seeds of a Catholic parish in the North Pole area were planted in the 1950s. Growth in the 1970s from military personnel, an oil refinery and a new high school led to the establishing a permanent Catholic parish. This building, replacing worship in the community hall, was dedicated in 1978. Parishioners did much of the work on the building, including the lectern, diamond willow cross, log altar and tabernacle—styled as an Alaskan Cache.
