Old Believers Russian Orthodox
When Russian Orthodox Patriarch Nikon adopted uniform Greek Orthodox practices in liturgy and vestment, some clergy and lay people revolted and kept to the traditional ways. They were surpressed and many fled to Siberia. There are only a few Old Believer churches in Moscow, distinctive by their simple and somewhat austere exteriors. This one, on Tverskaya Zastava, was built from 1914-1921. Closed in 1935, it was used as an anti-aircraft defense storehouse and later as a sculptor's studio. It was returned in 1993 and services began in 1995.
