The church is on the shore of Lake Baikal, the oldest and deepest fresh water lake in the world. It is also holds the largest volume of water with over 1/5th of the world's liquid surface fresh water and more than 90% of Russia's surface fresh water. It is a World Heritage Site.Russian pioneers first came to Listvyanka on the shore of Lake Baikal in the middle of the 17th century. The church was built in the 19th century by a Russian merchant who, it is said, was saved by St. Nicholas while crossing the lake during a terrible storm.
