Orthodox Church in America
The church was founded in 1916 by villagers from pirmarily Sanok and Lesko, and the building completed in 1917. The three copper domes were replaced in the mid-1980s. Services were suspended in 2009, though Serbian Orthodox priests from Chisholm, Hibbing, and Duluth, continue to serve at St. Nicholas on special occasions. Church valuables have been placed with a trustee for safe-keeping. Liturgies are held at least once a year. The St. Nicholas Preservation Society has taken on responsibility for upkeep of the church building with three purposes: grow Orthodoxy on the Iron Range; maintain parish history; preserve building for possible home for future mission or monastery church.
