Church of St. Nicholas

Smil'nyk / Smolnik Poland

[Byzantine Catholic (Ukrainian)]
Roman Catholic

The large church, built in 1806, once served more than 1000 parishioners. Four hundred of them immigrated to America to work in mines and factories. The roof and tower were damaged in 1944 during the war. The land and meadows that supported the priest have been confiscated by the Polish government. From 1956-61, it was used by Polish Roman Catholics. Closed from 1961-68, icons and liturgical items were stolen. The building was renovated in 1973 and has served Polish Roman Catholics since 1979. Renovations were again carried out in 1995.
