Church of St. Nicholas

Liavlia (Khorkovo), Arkhangelsk Oblast Russia

Russian Orthodox

The log church from 1539 is the oldest wooden hip-roof building in the region. The high ground church is a landmark. Liavlia residents moved to neighboring Khorkovo as the river banks eroded. Originally part of the monastery dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin, St Nicholas became a parish church when the monastery closed in 1765. The church was restored and reconsecrated to St. Nicholas in 1845. It was later covered in plank siding and tin roofing; during the Soviet period it was used for various purposes, including a garrison club.
