St. Nicholas of Velikoretskoye—Cathedral of the Intercession/St. Basil's
Tverskoy, Moscow City (Central)Russia
Russian Orthodox
The cathedral on Red Square, popularly known as St. Basil's, was built as a symbol of the uniting Russian lands. So it is divided into ten inner churches, rather than side chapels. All of the churches are built on one foundation with the central tower unifying them into one cathedral. The southern church was consecrated in the name of the Velikoretsky image of St. Nicholas. In 1555 a miraculous icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was brought from Vyatka to Moscow (hence the name Velikoretsky—"of big rivers" in Russian). The wall painting was done in 1786. The church was restored in 2005-06; it is now a museum.
