Chiesa di San Nicola di Bari—Via Appia Antica

Rome, Lazio Italy

[Roman Catholic]

The church was built after the Caetani family built a castle in 1302 that incorporated the round 1st century tomb of Cecilia Metella as the keep. The fortified castle developed a village with the large church of St Nicholas. The site was abandoned in 1435 with the roofs removed so they could not shelter robbers or rebels. The church is a rare Gothic example in Rome. Ruins of the church and castle are at Capo di Bove on the Via Appia Antica, not far from the catacombs.
