Eglise Saint-Nicolas

Wissant, Hauts-de-France France

Roman Catholic

The tower is from the 15th century; the nave rebuilt in 1835. Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, sailed from Wissant in 1170, knowing he faced martyrdom, I have come to risk life and limb for Justice and Truth. The church has a statue of bearded virgin St Wilgeforte, whose legend scholars believe grew out of the forgotten Luccan Christ, a once common Eastern image that was abandoned after the 13th century. It showed the Christ bearded, wearing a tunic.
