Church of Saint Nicholas

Nikolaevsk, Alaska USA

Old Believers Russian Orthodox

The village was founded by five Old Believer families who came from Oregon in 1965. The Old Believers separated from the Russian Orthodox Church in the 17th century when some liturgical changes were introduced, bringing the Russian Church liturgy closer to Greek liturgical practice. The Old Believers held to earlier traditional Russian Orthodox ways, suffering persecution in Russia until 1905.
