The church was built in 1292 as part of the Monastery of St Nicholas-on-the-Lipno. It is on a small island in the Mista River delta, south of Novgorod. The main icon—St Nicholas-on-the-Lipno, 72 inches high—is now in the Novgorod Kremlin museum. During the 1700s and the 1800s there were no parishioners and the church was nearly deserted. The belfry was pulled down after the Bolshevik revolution. The church was badly damaged during World War II, leading to 35% of medieval masonry being replaced during restoration in 1960. It is the only remnant of the monastery. The church, from the 1200s,The church is a Historic Monument of Novgorod and Surroundings and a World Heritage Site.
