St. Nikolaikirche

Vienna Landstraße Austria

[Roman Catholic]

In the 12th century a village settlement. Nikolaivorstadt, grew up around a St. Nicholas chapel. The chapel was destroyed in the first Turkish siege in 1529; a cemetery was established and the chapel rebuilt. The second Turkish siege again destroyed it in 1683. The church was built from 1736-37 in the middle of the road, the Nikolaikirche replacing the earlier cemetery chapel. The church was deconsecrated in 1784 to allow for widening the road. The Rochuskirche was immediately to the right of the Nikolaikirche and became the Landstraßer parish church.
