Founded in 1710 the monstery became one of the most important in Russia. The Nicholas Cemetery Church, built in 1868-1871, is one of five churches in the complex. The church and cemetery were closed in 1932. Monuments were mined for polished stones, destroying hundreds of graves. The Nicholas Church reopened for services in 1987. Monastery life was re-established in 1996. Many writers, actors and artists are buried in the cemetery, including the blessed hermit Mattahew Tatomir and composer Nikolai Rimsky-Koraskov.
