Chiesetta di San NIcola—Eremo di San Nicola

Ischia, Mount Epomeo, Campania Italy

Roman Catholic

The church is dug into the summit of Mount Epomeo, the highest point on the volcanic island of Ischia. Some of the corridors go through to the other side. It was established before 1459 and the statue of Saint Nicholas (1500) was placed in 1600. After cells were constructed around 1587 and served as a convent hermitage. Well camouflaged, the church also served as a defensive refuge from the Saracens. The ancient convent is now a restaurant and lodging is available in the cells.
