The church dates from 1182, becoming a parish in 1227. It was originally built outside the fortress. It was rebuilt in 1674 in the fortress for security reasons. Demolished in 1799, it reopened for worship in 1803. The interior dates from the late 1700s and the east facade is from the 19th century. Saint-Nicolas-en-Bertaimont was renamed Our Lady of Messines in 1992.
