Monastery of St. Nicholas—Svyato-Nikolsky Monastery

The monastery, founded in 1904, was the first monastery in Russia's Asian territory and is the oldest surviving monastery beyond the Urals. During the Soviet era the monastery was closed and the St. Nicholas Church and Transfiguration bell tower were destroyed. The monastery was used as a center for juvenile offenders. The relics of Simeon of Verkhotursk, a local saint, are kept here and it is a popular pilgrimage site, drawing up to 60,000 pilgrims. In 1998 the church was rebuilt in a different form.
