Kostel sv. Mikuláše

Prague (Vršovice) Czech Republic

Roman Catholic

The church was built in 1704 on Vršovické Square and enlarged in 1894-6, giving it a new baroque west front. The earliest church dated from 1028 and dedicated to Mary Magdalene. The bells were confiscated during both World Wars. The clocks were installed in 1866; the west face features a moon that waxes and wanes as does the real moon. It is one of the oldest monuments in Prague. The church was restsored in 1973. The original painting of St. Nicholas was stolen in 1988 and a new one installed in 2001.
