Aya Nikola Manastiri

Vize, Kiyiköy Turkey

The Byzantine monastery was carved into the rock in the 6th century. The church was on the ground floor with monk’s quarters above. It had three stories and is one of the best examples of a Byzantine rock monastery. “St. Nikolas” in Greek alphabet letters is found engraved over the arched north entrance. A holy spring was also part of the complex. The site is popular for wedding photographs. A large grant is furthering restoration with the hopes of greatly increasing tourism.
