Apikia, Andros Greece
Greek Orthodox
According to tradition this ancient monastery was built in the 8th century, though historical records do not mention it until the 1300s. Located in the center of the island, islanders took refuge in the monastery during pirate raids. The 11th century church has been restored and has frescos from the 1200s.The embroidered St. Nicholas icon was written by a nun named Leondia who wove her own hair into the icon. This icon is said to be the most active in Andros. The monastery also has relics of Saint Nicholas.
