The church is on the site of the St Nicholas parish church that first received the icon of Our Lady of Kazan when it was found. This church was built as part of an expansion of the convent complex from 1810 to 1816. It is one of the few monastery buildings to have survived the Soviet era and has been significantly rebuilt.
