The mother church, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, existed earlier than the 9th century. It was destroyed in 827 and then rebuilt. An earthquake destroyed the church in 1693. Rebuilding began again 28 years later and the new church dedicated in 1755. The dome, made of reinforced concrete was added in 1904. The statue of S. Nicholas is from 1621.
