The chapel was built in the 14th century a a stop along the pilgrimage to St. Albans Abbey. It was a chapel of ease to St Marys, Hitchin. Following the Reformation, it fell into disuse and was pillaged. However, the chapel was still used for weddings, though roofless and covered with moss and ivy. The site is regarded as haunted and is associated with ghosts, murder, and secret tunnels. In the early 20th century historial Reginald Hine extensively researched the chapel and pledged to, endeavour in all ghostly ways to protect and haunt these hallowed walls. He is now buried withhin the apse.
