St. Nikolaus Bildstock—Wayside Shrine of St. Nicholas

Heidelberg (near) Germany

Roman Catholic

The shrine was built in 1747 by a forest ranger who escaped a lightning strike after praying to St. Nicholas. He was also a city councilor and as a trained stone mason, he sculpted the St. Nicholas statue himself. It was gadly damaged about 1800 and was headless until 1950. A returning soldier from World War II had a new statue made out of gratitude for his surviving Russian captivity. Since then the statue is protected by a grid. The shrine in the forest south of Heidelberg. Flowers and candles decorate the shrine for St. Nicholas Day.
