The church was built by Capuchin monks between 1688 and 1705 on the site of the former customs yard. Ships sailed right up to the customs square to pay Rhine duty. The monastery church was built after Catholics received their religious freedom in1685. After 1802 the church was a parish church. The former monastery buildings were renovated in 1977, converted into a parish flat and parish hall.
