Kosciól sw. Mikolaja

Skwierzyna Poland

Roman Catholic

The church was built in the early 1400s; rebuilt in 1507, some fragments of the earlier church are still in the chancel. It is the oldest building in the city. The town became Lutheran in 1540 and the church did as well. The Catholic Church recovered it in the early 1600s. Fires burned the church several times, especially between 1624 and 1712. Reconstruction from 1861-1863 gave the church its present appearance and it was consecrated in 1863. The church was spared when Soviets entered the city in 1945 because they used it as a warehouse to hold equipment confiscated from the residents. The Parish came under the jurisdiction of the Congregation of Missionary Priests who still administer the church. The picture of Our Lady of Klewa was brought secretly to the church though for safekeeping it was kept hidden for many years until placed in the high altar in 1968. The church was named the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Dlewa in 2021.
