St Nicholas the Wonderworker Gate Church—Astrakhan Kremlin

Astrakhan, Astrakhan Oblast Russia

Russian Orthodox

The gate church is the oldest in Astrakhan. The first wooden church, built before 1568, was transferred to the north gate when the stone fortress walls were built. The church was dilapidated by 1728 and razed. A new gate church was finished in 1738. During the Soviet era it was used by the Kremlin garrison, losing most interior furnishings and decoration. Only the ceiling painting remains, restored in the 1980s. The Nikolsky Gate is the north tower. It's been known as "Nicola at the gatae."
