Aya Nikola Kilisesi

Bodrum (Halicarnassus) Turkey

[Greek Orthodox]

Built in 1780, the church was abandoned following the population exchange in 1923. Over time it was used for whatever purpose was needed: storage, cinema, stage for performances, even a wedding hall. After determining the church lacked historical value it was dynamited in 1969. The central part of the church was not destroyed and an adult education center was built around it. A proposal to restore the church as a museum failed and the church was to be demolished at the end of 2012. However, in 2014 a restoration project is underway and plans are to use it as a community and cultural center.
