The church, designed by architect James Renwick, Jr., was built during 1882 and 1883 as the Memorial Chapel of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in the Bowery. In 1911 the chapel was rented to Holy Trinity Slovak Lutheran Church until 1925 when St. Nicholas of Myra Orthodox Church assumed the lease, purchasing the church in 1937. The East Village church was designated a New York City Landmark in 2008.
