The church, part of an extensive monastery complex, was rebuilt following an earthquake in 1348. The tower dates from 1420. The church was used for military purposes following secularization in 1803. At that time the baroque interior was moved to the church in Vilshofen an der Donau. The church was returned to religious use in 1959, serving the parish and university. The tower was restored in the early 1990s. The 1070 Romanesque crypt was restored in the 1970s.
