St. Nicholas Orthodox Church

New Castle, Pennsylvania USA

[Greek Catholic]
[American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox]

Carpatho-Rusn immigrants came to this area around 1890. In 1910 they purchased a small wooden frame church that had been built by Welsh Congregationalists, who had built a larger church. In 1918 the church was rebuilt on the original foundation, as a larger brick church and adjoining rectory. The congregation was Greek Catholic until the late 1950s. The church held its final service on April 30, 2023, completing 107 years of service. The Gussie M. Walker Community Outreach purchased the building for their after-school and summer programming. Renovations will make an indoor playground and recreation center with classrooms and computer labs in the basement.
