Church of St. Nicholas Within

Dublin, Co. Dublin Republic of Ireland

[Roman Catholic/Church of Ireland]

Built in the 11th century the church was dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra. The parish was divided into two parts: St Nicholas Within (the walls) and St Nicholas Without, which used the north transept of St Patrick's Cathedral. The church fell into disrepair and was rebuilt in 1707. The church commissioners removed the roof in 1835 and partly demolished the church. In 1837 there were plans to build a new church, but that didn't happen. The parish was united with St. Audoen in 1867. Some of the church walls are still visible next to Peace Park, Nicholas Street and Christchurch Place. In 1988 the Peace Park or Garden was originally designed as a sunken garden to mitigate traffic noise. Closed for a number years due to anti-social behavior, the park was refurbished, made accessible, and reopened in 2019.
