[Church of St. Nicholas Without]—St. Patrick's Cathedral

Dublin, Co. Dublin Republic of Ireland

Church of Ireland (Anglican)

The chapel began in 1038, as the Danish king provided for returning Norsemen. The cathedral's north transept was screened off and served as the parish church of St Nicholas Without (the walls) from the mid-1300s until 1861. When the St Nicholas Parish was extended, it had two parts; the original parish known as St Nicholas Within served the area within city walls. That church was across from Christ Church Cathedral. St Nicholas Without offered Sunday worship, monthly Communion, and daily Matins. The transept became ruinous by 1784 but was rebuilt as a parish church around 1822. St Nicholas Without was united with the Parish of St Luke in 1861. St Luke's was closed in 1975.
