St. Nicholas Cathedral

Polotsk Belarus

[Russian Orthodox]

Before the 1917 Revolution, St. Nicholas Day, December 19th, was celebrated as the Day of Polotsk. The cathedral, built in 1738, and dedicated to cadets, was blown up in 1964. Residents are now trying to have the cathedral restored.

The unretouched color 1912 photo is from the Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii Collection.
