Antiochian Orthodox
This Arabic-speaking Orthodox community was established in 1895, moving to Brooklyn in 1902 when it was dedicated to the Great Wonder-Worker, Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra. In 1904 Archmandrite Raphael Hawaweeny, now a saint of the Church, was elected Vicar Bishop to TIKHON and head of the Syrian Mission of the Russian Orthodox Church in North America; St. Nicholas became a cathedral and is now the Mother Cathedral of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. The present church, a former Episcopal church purchased in 1920, was foreclosed during the Depression, though the parish was able to continue to rent and occupy the premises, until it was again secured. The church is in the Boerum Hill neighborhood.
