Zolochiv Ukraine
Ukrainian Catholic (Byzantine)
The sixteenth century church served a defensive purpose, with thick walls and narrow windows, as well as worship. When rebuilt in 1765, Baroque features were installed while retaining earlier architectural forms. Restoration was carried out in the early 1900s before the church was converted into a secular museum in the Soviet era. Icons were destroyed, but wall frescos saved. Some icons were preserved in the Lviv National Museum and Lviv Art Gallery. Returned to religious use in 1990, the church is in the care of Basilian Fathers.
