Perm (Molotov), Perm Krai Russia
Russian Orthodox
The cathedral, also known as Belaya Gora (White Mountain) Monastery, is the largest cathedral in the Urals. It is so named because once snow falls, it doesn't thaw until spring. The monastery sheltered Old Believers in the 1700s. The monastery housed 400 monks in 1917 when it was taken in the Russian Revolution. It was turned into a mental hospital, the bells smashed and the art was largely destroyed. After a patient burned the roof in 1979 the building was abandoned. Restoration began in 1993.
