Cathedral Church of St Nicholas—Nikolayev-Chyrnoostrovsky Convent

The monastery was rebuilt following the Patriotic War of 1812, During the Soviet time it was ransacked. In 1991 it was returned to the Orthodox Church and revived as a convent. The convent takes in orphans and other needy girls who live, up to the age of 12, in a white-washed house near the gates. Older girls live with the sisters in the convent. The sisters operate a school for the girls, who transfer to gymnasium when they are older. The girls call themselves "Grandaughters of St. Nicholas."
