Maloyaroslavets, Kaluga Oblast Russia
Russian Orthodox
The monastery was rebuilt following the Patriotic War of 1812. It was here that Napoleon was turned back; the monastery was in the center of the battle. During the Soviet time it was ransacked. In 1991 it was returned to the Orthodox Church and revived as a convent. The convent takes in orphans and other needy girls who live, up to the age of 12, in a white-washed house near the gates. Older girls live with the sisters in the convent. The sisters operate a school for the girls, who transfer to gymnasium when they are older. The girls call themselves "Grandaughters of St. Nicholas."
