St. Nicholas Church, the oldest in New Forest, was built on the site of an even older Saxon church as Christians have worshiped here since AD 793. Victorians saved both Saxon and Norman work when enlarging the church. One of the stained glass windows is a modern panel showing St. Nicholas standing in a ship.

The No. 1 New Zealand Hospital was in Bronkenhurst during World War I and ninety-two New Zealand soldiers are buried in the churchyard. A memorial service is held annually on the Sunday nearest Anzac Day, 25 April, with representatives from New Zealand.
